Debt Buyers Association
- Challenge: The Debt Buyers Association, which represents debt buyers that purchase large volumes of debt from commercial banks were facing legislation that would kill their industry and force thousands of New Yorkers to lose their jobs. The legislation would have deterred lenders from extending credit to potential borrowers.
“Dear Jerry and Anthony, I want to thank you both for your efforts with respect to S. 4398, the Consumer Credit Fairness Act. Your strategy was as savvy as it was successful, and I have greatly enjoyed working with you. I could not have asked for better guides to the world of Albany. Thank you for your excellent work on behalf of the debt buyers.”

- Solution: Empire created a grassroots campaign that utilized the thousands of industry employees in Western New York and Lower Hudson Regions to send letters and meet with key State Senators to put pressure on them and kill the bill. We galvanized support from non-traditional allies such as the NYS Court Reporters and Court Officers, Business Council of NY, National Federation of Independent Business, and major banks Citibank, M&T and J.P. Morgan Chase.
- Result: Empire halted the passage of this legislation in the State Senate, which would have had an adverse impact on all financial institutions in the state that lend money. Thanks to our strong efforts this legislation was held after having passed the Assembly for the third time in one year.
